Winnie the Pooh Day

I can’t let ‘Winnie the Pooh day’ go by without a small mention…

I’ve always loved the original Winnie the Pooh stories and illustrations and during my 5 years on our “Thought for the day” AA Milne and the loveable bear featured numerous times to inspire students and staff with a smile. His words can be used to exemplify friendship, courage, adventure, patience, self-worth…you name it, there is a Pooh quote to illustrate it.

There are even some that are perfect to inspire the School Business Manager;

Organising is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it’s not all mixed up.

or, much more me;

One of the advantages of being disorganised is that one is always making surprising discoveries.

But my favourite of all is;

You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.

As I go through the process of support staff performance review meetings I’m having to convince my colleagues that, yes, they make a significant contribution to the success of our school. Whether they be cleaners, caretakers, technicians, administrators, assistants or caterers they all contribute, and are vital, to the teaching and learning going on around them. Of course there have been challenges along the way but if we all reflect on how much has been learned, the strength in our team and how brave we’ve been in the face of change in the last year, it is clearly not just the student body that benefit from being in our environment.

I like to cultivate an optimistic attitude to life and, even though I struggle each day to be a morning person, I’m grateful for every day and the challenges, variety, friendships and laughter that I find on the way.

I think Pooh just reminds me of this and also that in the cold and dark that is January…

It never hurts to keep looking for sunshine.
